Canadian TV

There is a tv series up here called “Murdoch Murder Mysteries.” It’s a Sherlock Holmes/CSI type of tv series, taking place in Toronto in the 1890’s and the turn of the century. One of the themes of this show is the emerging field of forensics in solving murders and police resistance to this new fangled method of investigation.

A couple of weeks ago, we watched the two hour tv movie upon which this series is based. The story centered on the murder of a prostitute in an alleyway. What was notable about this tv movie (on a channel similar to ABC, CBS or NBC in the US) was the full frontal nudity. I noted to my wife that this would be edited out if it were being aired on the Big Three US networks as well as most mainstream cable channels in the States. She noted that Canadian tv has become more “European” over the years, particularly in the past 5 to 10 years. I have observed that you generally see more nudity on Canadian cable channels and tv shows than on American tv.

Lest anyone get the wrong idea, Canadian tv is not overrun by images of nudity. It just pops up more frequently than on American tv. Just throwing out another cultural difference between the two countries.
